San Diego Gluten-Free Dining Asian Foods

Eating Asian food can be difficult with MSG and soy sauce which has gluten in it.  Here are places that have gluten-free menus and even some with gluten-free soy sauce!

Chinese:
1. PF Chang’s: Chinese-American food.  The lemon chicken is a top pick.

Thai:
1. Supannee House of Thai: Has a GF menu

Sushi:
1. Poway Sushi Lounge: there is gluten-free ponzu sauce!
2. Rocking Tanuki - ask for the gluten-free soy sauce

Asian Fusion: 
1. Roppongi restaurant & sushi bar: Has a separate GF menu
2. Roy’s Yamaguchi Pacific Rim Cuisine: Has a separate GF menu
3. Sipz Fusion: Casual Asian style food that is Vegan and Vegetarian. They carry GF baked goods too.

San Diego Gluten-free Breakfast and Bakeries

Brunch:

Breakfast can get boring with just eggs and bacon but these places for full gluten-free menus to please any picky gf eater.

Carlsbad:
The Argyle Restaurant: serves brunch on both Saturday and Sunday at the luxurious Park Hyatt Aviara

East Village, North Park and in Mission Beach: 7am-3pm
The Mission: has a delicious rosemary bread and other gluten-free options on their menu.

La Jolla: 
Caroline's Seaside Cafe is like a mini getaway with their beautiful view of the ocean.  They don't have a specific GF menu like the ones above but do have lots of options.

*Love Claire's on Cedros for using local and organic goods but their gluten-free items are not prepared in a gluten-free environment.  They list it on their site which is so appreciated!  Not for Celiac.

Bakeries:   

Dying for a cupcake or even a grain-free bread?  These bakeries will satisfy your sweet tooth and carb craving.  From the richest of dark brownies to delicious acai bowls.

  • Bard's Sorghum 4.6% ABV sorghum based and a lighter tasting larger
  • Harvester Brewing Portland's fresh hop IPA boasts chestnuts, white sorghum, and gluten-free oats
  • Green's Belgium based Discovery Amber Ale (6% ABV), ale with subtle caramel and nut flavors, Quest Tripel Blonde Ale (8.5% ABV), a light, cider-like fruity brew and the richer, darker, and sweeter Endeavor Dubbel Ale (7% ABV).
  • Dogfish Head Tweason'ale (6.0% ABV) molasses and pit fruit with strawberry notes.
  • New Planet (5.0% ABV) Boulder based company has an amber ale and a Belgian ale
  • Epic Brewing in Salt Lake City has the Glutenator a bitter citrus hop taste 6.8% ABV
  • Lakefront Brewery New Grist (5.1% ABV) Milwaukee’s has an ale with hints of green apple
  • Redbridge (4.0% ABV) Anheuser-Busch’s sorghum-based lager is crisp and refreshing
  • Omission Portland based makes malted barley and then takes out the gluten in a lager 4.6% ABV and a pale ale 5.8% ABV.  They won gold and silver medals in the gluten-free category at the 2012 Great International Beer and Cider Competition.
  • O'Brien Belgian Ale, is a limited release seasonal beer and was awarded the gold medal by the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) 
  • Redbridge by Anheuser-Busch
  • New Planet Tread Lightly  Oregan beer with a raspberry puree and orange peel flavor similar to a raspberry cider with its own twist.
  • Brunehaut Ambree, this Belgian beer tastes like a traditional amber ale and comes in at 6.5% ABV.
  • Celia Saison combines Curaçao orange peel, Belgian yeast and crisp Celia hops.

Eating out can be frustrating for people with Celiac disease but there are more places to eat at then you might think in San Diego.

Tip: Go as far as telling them you are gluten intolerant because even some of the GF places have cross-contamination otherwise the kitchen may not take as much care.
